On Jan. 27, the women鈥檚 hockey team (10-13-2, 6-10-2 ECAC) achieved a dominant home win against No. 5 Quinnipiac (22-7-1, 11-7-0 ECAC) in a game that will go down in the history books 鈥� but not for the win.
The fabled 鈥淢ichigan鈥� goal was in a NCAA game by Mike Legg for the University of Michigan in the 1996 NCAA tournament. The stick he used to score that goal in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
A 鈥淢ichigan鈥� goal occurs when 鈥渁 skater will scoop the puck onto the blade of their stick, and then with the puck still on the blade, whip the stick around the net and try to tuck the puck in a top corner over a goalie's shoulder,鈥� according to Sporting 国产偷拍.
According to a University , fewer than ten NHL players have completed the perfect 鈥淢ichigan鈥� since that fateful 1996 day.
Until Jan. 27, there had only been one recorded 鈥淢ichigan鈥� goal by a women鈥檚 ice hockey player. Now there are two.
With the game tied 1-1 against the Bobcats, forward Margot Norehad 鈥�27 circled behind the net, carefully lifted the puck onto her stick and flicked it into the uppermost corner of the goal to take the lead and cement her place in history.
When Cameron Sikich 鈥�25 passed Norehad the puck in the neutral zone, Norehad immediately thought of the 鈥淢ichigan,鈥� she wrote in a message to The Herald. 鈥淲hen I was skating around (the defender), instead of trying to force myself through the middle of the ice I decided to go behind the net. I thought to myself if (the defender) doesn't follow me behind the net I am going to do the 鈥楳ichigan.鈥欌��
The news of this incredible feat spread quickly around the world of sports. The goal appeared as the day鈥檚 No. 1 play on ESPN SportsCenter.
鈥淭he reaction and support from everyone has been unreal and I am so blessed and thankful to have the ability to make history,鈥� Norehad wrote. 鈥淚t was a very surreal moment seeing my goal on SportsCenter and it's an honor I don't take lightly.鈥�
The complex 鈥淢ichigan鈥� maneuver is something Norehad had only ever attempted on her own time, outside of official Brown practice. She never imagined actually having the chance to use it.
鈥淚 would visualize myself successfully doing the 鈥楳ichigan鈥� during a game but didn't focus much on it. I just figured it would be a good skill to have if the time ever presented itself during a game,鈥� Norehad wrote.
Despite Norehad鈥檚 historic goal, she still credits the underdog win to good team synergy and a group effort.
鈥淭he ECAC is a very competitive and talented league where 90% of the players in the league could pull off the 鈥楳ichigan,鈥欌�� Norehad wrote. 鈥淎ll around, that win was a total team effort; everyone played outstanding.鈥�
Norehad has already established herself as a regular player in her first-year with Bruno. She is fourth overall on the team in points, third in goals scored and first in 鈥淪portsCenter鈥� appearances.
鈥淭his is only just the beginning for me,鈥� Norehad wrote. 鈥淚 have a long way to go and a lot to do and learn in order to be the player I want to be. With discipline and consistency, I will reach my full potential, and I'm looking forward to what the future has in store for me.鈥�
